Argument in Favor of Measure N
Measure N brings local control home and creates the Davis City Charter.
Measure N takes our municipal affairs away from the state and puts them in the hands of local government and the people of Davis.
Measure N will not cost residents more money. There are no additional taxes involved in becoming a charter city, nor does it increase the city’s ability to raise or impose taxes in the future.
Home rule is a matter of self determination. Measure N makes our city officials more accountable and provides for more citizen involvement. By strengthening local control, we prevent the state legislature from adopting legislation that applies broadly to the state but fails to take into account the unique needs of Davis.
- More Choices, New Opportunities
Charter cities have increased discretion in their decision making. This flexibility can translate into a reduction of bureaucratic red tape and improvements in the city’s delivery of services.
Measure N also allows Davis to consider alternative methods of choosing city representatives and continue pursuing public power, which Davis citizens have supported in past ballot measures.
- Protection Of Davis Values
The best future for Davis requires an effective government that represents the values of the community. Davis is a cutting-edge city with visionary values. Without a charter, our innovative policies and laws could be overruled by the state. Measure N defends Davis’ right to manage and limit its growth and provides increased protection from intrusive state legislation.
Measure N puts us in charge of our future. By creating our own “constitution,” we can be more explicit about what is important to our quality of life.
The charter can only be approved or changed by you, the voters. For more information, please visit http://www.homerulefordavis.org.
